Alaffia! LOCAL, NORTHWEST, NATURAL AND FAIR TRADE.

If you’re a bit of a product junkie like myself, you know about Ms. Jessie’s and Carol’s Daughter.  But, did you know that right here in the Northwest we have a locally owned and manufactured natural hair product line? In Olympia, WA. to be exact. If you haven't guessed yet, the company is Alaffia.

I had a chance to try The Virgin Coconut and Shea butter Hair lotion (which smells marvelous!) and just this morning washed and went with their Shea and Virgin Coconut Enriching Shampoo and the Neem and Shea Scalp Recovery Conditioner (my hair and scalp just hates it when the seasons change.)  The Neem oil in the conditioner, went to work right away.  I could feel a wonderful cooling sensation and my scalp just felt very happy! Yeah! To top that off, the products are purchased through Fair Trade from small business women in Togo, West Africa.  The company also donates funds to help fund community enrichment projects in West African communities. Among other projects Alaffia donates funds to purchase metal roofs, school benches, and school supplies to rural schools in central Togo. You can check out Alaffia and their other products on their website. Way to go Alaffia!

Ten Loc Commandments

Hello Northwest naturals!  Some of you have asked me how I learned about locing my hair while living in the Northwest.  No big secret. I just spent a good amount of time on Youtube.  The sisters there are so helpful! They have a wealth of knowledge. If you are wanting some quick and helpful information on locs then here is a wonderful link to a Youtube video The Ten Loc Commandments. In the video she mentions the essential oils of rosemary and Jojoba oil which I highly recommend. For the rosemary oil you can just place it in a small spritz bottle with some filtered water and gently spritz your locs or twists in the morning.  Just spritz and go!

Sister, is Celibacy for You?

Is Celibacy for you?

I know this is first a hair blog but, as you know as women we start talking about hair and finding ourselves and then the conversation branches out into all other aspects of life.  Recently, I’ve had many questions regarding celibacy and what it means as a Christian, as an African-American woman, and as a single women.  I was reminded of a book I purchased years ago by Donna Marie Williams called Sensual Celibacy.  The author is an African-American woman a woman who has been married, single, and married again. But along the way she found celibacy and developed a 10 step program to reclaim self, creativity, and spiritual connection through the practice of celibacy.  I found the book helpful.  So much so that I am rereading it ten years later, and I recommend it to others.

God Bless!

Looking for Transition inspiration?

Looking for Transition Inspiration?

Somewhere around the end of the second month of my transition to locs, while I was still wearing twists, and while I knew I could still go back, I began to doubt myself. I began to listen more to the looks of those people who asked why I just didn't get braids. I began to wonder how I would be able to pass off my locs as professional and then I found these wonderful videos on youtube.   I hope they will work to inspire you and help you believe in your natural beauty.
